Antigone

I wake up counting the languages

I used to know

and when a lover says

Shout at the moment when-

I am speechless

Oh you can stuff your prayers in the wall
but your enemy on the other side
spits on them

He wants answers

Soon, sooner, come, now

He’s not afraid of death
has killed a snake with his bare hands
and if something is not allowed
not allowed, by God

He will do it.

And what about you he asks

Are you brave enough?

Like I say I am tongue-tied
in at least half a dozen languages

In this version
Antigone keeps on shouting
From deep in her cave
Even as they pile on the rocks.
