What Gets Killed to Make an iPhone?
What gets killed to make an iPhone?
This little world of convenience
In the jaws of our hands, these screens
Of memeable street scenes of labyrinthine
Advertising Merchandising
In group blessing, groupthink and things
And things we don’t need
Or have ever needed
But as nostalgia receded to
Pantomime dame status
Our memories loop back around
To chase and erase us
And we remember them faint and faded
And the spaces
Between them gaped and frayed
And then forgetting was the thing
To be afraid of
And each recollection
Became a zoomed out version
Or a zoomed in version of the next
Until we saw only impressions
Of ourselves
In the places where a selfie should be
Albert & Herbert, 1933
Here on this heathland, a hut
A herd of goats for milk
Out here, the air blows clean
On the breeze, time enough to think
I and my rifle, you and your books
Though I know not of what you speak
I know it important enough
To be protected and sanctified
Nazi bastards won’t find you here
Out here on Roughton heath
You can tend to the big ideas
And I in silent, still sentry to my own
Humble thoughts
…
This hut, a palace lined with hospitality
And my own humble gratitude
Seems to be but sparse furniture
But know it teak strong and enough
For us both to sit awhile in ponder
And wonder at this lot of ours
You and your rifle and me and my books
Papers dog worn by urgent flight
Out across the bronze water
The winds of history stiffen
Now, let us catch our breath
Matt Hancock Superstar
Jesus Christ, mercy me
Will we never be set free
A booster jab of scrutiny
A scab on my integrity
A newsprint slab of controversy
Through rose tinted transparency
Why oh why can’t they see?
I was the Elvis of the health service
The Incredible Hulk of politics
The whole country’s gone toxic
I aimed for fame but not like this
I’m humble Matt Hancock, bloke from TV
Covid bungle
Cupboard fumble
Celebrity jungle
Career trajectory, that’s me!
Matt Hancock, they toast me in bars
Matt Hancock, celebrity diarist
The Matt Hancock Experience lead guitarist
How about matt Hancock branded cigars?
Because I’m Matt Hancock
Not twat halfcock
I’m Matt Hancock superstar
