Parabola
Blackbird flutters up;
injured, impaired,
inadequate flight
describes parabolic arc
back to the hands of
the woman aching
to provide care;
it submits to her gentle grasp.
She juggles eager whippet
and becalmed patient.
The immediate drama past,
we pass,
exchange nods,
awkward, no-teeth smiles;
we both know it was her dog’s teeth
that she rescued the bird from
and now she is burdened
with two souls’ welfare.
